I have seldom been so appalled by ignorance as that presented in the article by Sean Duffy in the September 4, 2024, edition of the Gazette on the issue of What Ails Families? Start With Absent Dads.
For some years I have been pointing out that under current law a man has to be functionally insane to marry and a drooling idiot to sire a child.
First, and probably foremost, data clearly show that 70% to 80% of all divorces are initiated by the wife. And all too commonly it is clear that the mother does everything in her power, and whatever that her attorneys and “family” courts allow, if not more, to drive the father away from his children. Restraining orders, false allegations of child abuse, charges of domestic violence, etc. are commonplace weapons to keep dad away from his kids today. And even if he is allowed visitation, it is often only under supervised conditions for which he must pay $50 to $75 an hour to sit under often hostile observation with his children. On top of which he is probably paying at least one-third of his income as child support!
Yet Mr. Duffy declares that “...for decades, too many men have intentionally shirked or abandoned their duties as fathers, dumping the massive burden of raising children onto the backs of single mothers.” Yet it is obvious from the divorce statistics that it is the mothers who are driving the fathers of their children away!
Worse yet, as I pointed out above, a man has to be functionally insane to marry under current laws and that lesson has been learned all too well. Roughly 40% to 50% of children today are born out-of-wedlock.
Even more appalling, in terms of our very survival, is that under current conditions the birthrate has fallen to around 1.6 children per female from the essential minimum of 2.2 children necessary to simply maintain the population. And promoting illegal immigration is an extremely poor substitute.
Clearly, and unquestionably it is not an easy job being a single parent. But it is a choice far too many women appear to be making, while blaming men for their poor decisions. Today there are many easily available options to avoid becoming a mother, with even the option of abortion if birth control methods are ignored.
Even when single parenting is the option, data appear to show that fathers are more successful than mothers in raising their children. Thus, it is appalling to find that once again fathers are being blamed for something they often go to extremes to try and prevent!
