General Notes

2-1-1 —Dial 211 most anywhere in the U.S. for referrals for food, shelter, rent, utilities, medical, dental, prescriptions, senior assistance, and disabilities.
For help finding employment Hero2Hired may be a good place to start.
Note: We do not list facilities, organizations, or groups whom we are aware discriminate against men or women on the basis of race, religion, origin, or gender except as noted.
If you need to conference with your colleagues you might try Freeconference.com or Free Audio Conferencing for free conference calling.

Known shelters are listed here. For information on Service Dogs click here

If you know of a site or place where veterans or active-duty military can seek help that isn't listed here we would very much like to hear from you in order to add it to our list. Your help will help other veterans. Send your suggestions to comments@ejfi.org. See also the information on the Top 10 violence-inducing prescription drugs. The problem might be with the prescription drugs the veteran is taking.

Check on a “charity” before you donate

Top

There are many sites and organizations who are attempting to milk the plight of veterans for their own gain. If you have a negative experience with an organization listed here please let us know at comments@ejfi.org and the link will be quickly deleted. Before you give to any charity you should investigate them carefully. One measure is how much of the money they receive actually goes toward the cause they support. A 2007 review of a number of veteran charities can be found here.

Many charities are simply giant money making scams and the Ten Worst are listed in this article.

They are:

1. Kids Wish Network (2.5%)

2. Cancer Fund of America (0.9%)

3. Children's Wish Foundation International (10.8%)

4. American Breast Cancer Foundation (5.3%)

5. Firefighters Charitable Foundation (8.4%)

6. Breast Cancer Relief Foundation (2.2%)

7. International Union of Police Associations (0.5%)

8. National Veterans Service Fund (7.8% or an AFR of 92.2% if you are part of CFC)

9. American Association of State Troopers (8.6%)

10. Children's Cancer Fund of America (5.3%)

Percentages in parentheses are amounts that actually go toward helping the issue they claim to be supporting. Needless to say, none of these are recommended.

The EJF recently (Sept. 2016) learned the IRS has closed down the National Vietnam Veterans Foundation (NVVF) after it was found that less than 2% of organizational revenue was going toward charitable causes.

Charity Watch also posts ratings of charities serving veterans.

In the past the EJF had little good to say about the Wounded Warrior Project but in 2016 several veterans related their first-hand experiences with this charity and it is now recommended. And posted veteran comments have gone from sharply negative to very positive. They fired their spendthrift CEO, cut staff, and realigned their mission under Michael Linnington (Lt. Gen., USA, Ret.), a wise move for this now valuable charity.
